Ask yourself - What do you want? Or if it’s easier, what do you want to/have to change in order to get what you want?


Recently, a close friend and I were talking about our lives. Things we want and our feelings, which due to the pandemic we’re currently living through, has completely changed.

We’ve realised what’s most important to us and things that we REALLY want to do.

Now it’s a matter of HOW do we get to where we want to be?

Again, this is a really overwhelming question when you’re considering your whole life. But you don’t have to plan that far ahead?

Every single day you can be making changes steering you to the life you want to create for yourself.

Someone once told me about the ‘rocks, pebbles and sand’ analogy, it goes something like this.

“A professor held up a jar and filled it with big rocks, he asked the students if the jar was full, they answered yes. He then poured a tub of small pebbles into the same jar, filling the spaces around the big rocks, again, he asked the students if the jar was full, and again they replied yes.

He finally poured a container filled with sand into the jar, which fell into the spaces around the big rocks and small pebbles and asked the students a final time if the jar was full. Finally, they were right in answering yes, the jar was completely full.”


The jar in the story represents life, the rocks are the most important things, your family and health for example. The pebbles are still important but less so, like your job, a house, your car etc. Finally, the sand is the small stuff, things that don’t really matter but still exist in your daily life.


The idea is to make space for the things most important to you. If you fill up your life with the small, insignificant things you won’t have time to focus on those that mean the most to you.

Use this analogy in your own life. Note down the things that are your rocks, pebbles and sand. Reflect on how you spend your days and if you’re letting the sand clog up them up.

Change is a gradual thing but you have to start somewhere. Visualise the life you want and what little changes can you make day by day?

Maybe it’s getting up slightly earlier, or going for a walk.
